What We Believe

What We Believe

At Peer Washington, our work is guided by a simple idea: people are stronger when they have support, connection, and the opportunity to be heard without judgment.

Every day, we see people overcome challenges, discover strengths they didn't know they had, and build lives that once felt out of reach. We believe change is possible and that peer support plays an important role in helping people move forward.

The beliefs below shape how we serve our members, support our communities, and approach our work.

We Believe in the Power of Peer Support

Peer support is at the heart of everything we do.

There is something powerful about connecting with someone who has faced similar challenges and understands what you're going through. We believe people are often best able to support one another through shared experience, mutual trust, and compassionate support.

Peer support creates opportunities for people to share experiences, learn from one another, and find encouragement without judgment.

We believe lived experience has value and that people can help one another grow, heal, and move forward.

We Believe Recovery Is Possible

Recovery looks different for every person.

For some, recovery may mean overcoming addiction. For others, it may mean improving mental wellness, managing a chronic illness, rebuilding relationships, finding stability, or discovering a renewed sense of purpose.

We believe people are more than the challenges they face, and we believe growth and change are possible at every stage of life.

We also recognize that recovery is personal and self-defined. We honor a person's recovery when they tell us they are in recovery.

We Believe Community Matters

No one should have to face life's challenges alone.

Isolation can make difficult situations feel overwhelming. Connection can help people find hope, support, and a sense of belonging.

We believe strong communities are built when people have places where they feel welcomed, valued, and supported.

We Believe Lived Experience Has Value

The experiences people carry with them matter.

Many of the individuals who support others through Peer Washington have faced challenges of their own. Their experiences help them connect with others in meaningful ways and provide support that comes from understanding rather than assumption.

We believe lived experience is a source of strength, leadership, insight, and connection.

We Believe in Celebrating Victories

Recovery is made up of many victories, both large and small.

Sometimes progress looks like finding employment. Sometimes it means rebuilding a relationship, attending a support group, asking for help, or simply making it through a difficult day.

We believe these victories matter.

While we never ignore the challenges people face, we choose to focus on resilience, growth, and the progress people make along the way. Every step forward deserves recognition.

We Believe Everyone Deserves Dignity and Respect

Every person deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.

We believe every individual has worth and deserves access to support, opportunity, and community.

We are committed to creating environments grounded in safety, trust, inclusiveness, and the celebration of individual differences.

We Believe LGBTQ+ Communities Deserve Support

Peer Washington was founded by members of Washington's LGBTQ+ community, and those roots remain an important and visible part of who we are today.

For decades, we have worked to create welcoming and affirming spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals can find support, connection, and community. Maintaining safe and welcoming spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals remains a core part of our organizational purpose.

We remain committed to serving LGBTQ+ communities while also extending peer support services to people from many different backgrounds who are impacted by addiction, mental health challenges, HIV/AIDS, and other chronic illnesses.

We Believe in Meeting People Where They Are

People come to us from many different circumstances and at many different points in their lives.

Some are seeking recovery. Some are looking for community. Some are searching for resources, training, employment support, or opportunities to give back.

Wherever someone is on their journey, we believe they deserve to be met with understanding rather than judgment.

Our role is not to tell people what their path should be. Our role is to walk alongside them as they discover what works for them.

We believe people are the experts in their own lives, and that support is most effective when it respects autonomy, choice, and self-determination.
