Big News from Workforce Development!
Peer Workforce Development has been working on a 250-hour college class and a six-month fully paid apprenticeship for people who want to become Certified Peer Counselors. Stephanie Lane has logged over 500 hours writing nine classes for the course and recruited current CPC trainers to edit and co-train the classes. This was one of the first projects Josh Wallace handed over to the WFD team, and a year later, it is complete, and the first cohort is in place. "This is a groundbreaking program for peers in so many ways," Lane states." Peers will get paid to go to college and get a new job! So many employers are looking for great peers."

Individuals interested in becoming Certified Peer Counselors and are accepted into the program will be paired with an employer, get their tuition paid for, and receive the great benefits of a six-month apprenticeship. In partnership with Peer WA WFD, this group wanted to make sure the class stayed "peer" and that only peers could teach or take the class. It's an absolute game-changer for the peer support world.

Please email stephanie@peerwd.org if you have any questions.
Tune of the Month
Frank Sinatra - My Way

With his birthday on December 12th, Frank Sinatra has certainly taken over the winter soundwaves with his many Christmas-themed hits. The song "My Way" has no holiday connections, but gives a nice wintertime warmth while speaking to anyone working on their self-determination and betterment.
Secret Secret Gift Exchange
Just a few helpful reminders for any participants of the Secret Secret Gift Exchange:

Your gift needs to get to its location no later than December 16th, the "Opening Day".

Don't hesitate to ask around in case anyone at your site may be visiting the other sites soon, as they may be able to deliver your gift for you.

On December 9th, both Peer Spokane and Peer Seattle will have a box each sent to each other. This is meant to be a vessel for any gifts to hitch a ride on if they need to cross the mountains.

On December 14th, Rivet has agreed to do a trip up and down our west-side site locations in order to help transfer any gifts that need to be delivered to another west-side site.

On December 16th, we have our Zoom party to open our presents together with our Secret Host. EVERYONE is invited to this, even if you haven't participated in the gift exchange. Any festive wear, ugly sweaters, comfy pajamas, and silly hats are encouraged during the party.

Pronouns?
Pronouns are nothing new, but there can be some confusion over the concept of "preferred pronouns." I highly encourage everyone to check out GLSEN's report on pronouns for an excellently curated brief on most things you need to know about pronouns and how they interact with gender identity. How we interact with each other is constantly evolving, and it's always a good idea to try to keep yourself informed so you're able to better respect not just your coworkers and our members but everyone in your daily life too.

Andre Antunes - Master of Puppets (Muse style)

Justin Harmon mentioned Metallica as a major musical influence during our interview together, and this cover was introduced to me right after talking with him. This is a classic anthem for many fighting drug addiction, but done in the style of Muse. As someone who grew up listening to both bands, the nostalgia factor is strong with this musical medley.

Tune of the Month
D Smoke - No Commas

With his usual additions of Spanish in his work, D Smoke delivered us this gold back in 2020. His lyrics mention gentrification and how it can entrap people of color in cycles of poverty and oppression is just as relevant as ever especially during this year's Black History Month.

All you have to do is click the button below.
Staff Photoshoot Ettiquette
We try to have staff photoshoots every several months to keep up with new employees and keep our older pictures up-to-date. This month we've got three different ones lined up (Spokane on the 18th, Seattle the 19th, and Olympia the 26th).

Wear what you feel best in and represents you but please follow these tips:
1) Don't wear anything green; the photo will not work well with the green screen backdrop. Even small bits of green in your clothing will throw it off.
2) Please try and wear contrasting colors to the logo of your location. For example, Peer Kent uses a purple background, so wearing dark purple yourself will not stand out well.
3) Try to stay away from "branded" clothing or shirts with colorful pictures or images.
4) Bring options!
Please be prompt when showing up; we need to move people in and out of the room and not congregate so that we might respect everyone's boundaries and space. COVID protocols do apply, and you will have an opportunity to have photos with and without your mask on.
Sign up HERE (unless you are in Spokane). If you have any questions, please reach out to Rivet or Tyler.

Cage the Elephant - Instant Crush (Unpeeled)

Take a song written by Daft Punk and Julian Casablancas but unplug it and give it to Cage the Elephant to perform. In my opinion, this is one of those "lightning in a bottle" songs that have an incredible ability to match a large number of different human emotions. No matter your mood, this often improves upon it.
Bert bids farewell...
We are saddened to announce that our own Roberta "Bert" Romero will be leaving her position later this month. We are also extremely excited for her to tackle her new job opportunity of continuing the "Facing Race" series on King 5 news which is definitely worth highlighting and celebrating.

"Facing Race" is a series that aims to help Pacific Northwest residents understand racism, internalize it and take action to dismantle it at both an individual and systemic level. Their stories will expose the surprising truth about the inequities, injustices, and behaviors that have allowed modern-day racism in the Pacific Northwest to persist. They will introduce the audience to the people who continue to suffer as a result of the systems in place today, and they'll also meet the people who've come up with unique solutions to bring change. Ultimately, exploring the small and large steps that are required of each of us to make our national reckoning on race a turning point.
Some words from Bert:

"For me, this is an opportunity to do a type of journalism I never expected. In my 30 plus years of working in and around newsrooms, this is the first time I have seen a company make a commitment with time, money, and resources to truly tell stories of underserved BIPOC community. It is also about highlighting and taking a sharp investigative lens at issues that need to be discussed and may oftentimes be uncomfortable. I will also carry my Peer roots with me. And I know as I grow in this role, I will continue to elevate Peer work as well. I am dedicated to my Peer work colleagues (and I will say "FAMILY") and will remain close as hopefully a board member for Peer Washington."

We wish you only the best, Bert! Check out more about "Facing Race" HERE.

Sinnerman - Nina Simone, Sofi Tukker

Revamping our online group spaces
Our groups are leaving Facebook! Due to a myriad of reasons and troubles that Facebook has provided us; we are transferring all of our group pages onto our websites. This will also help reach our members who do not use Facebook while still providing all of the same benefits.

Are we fully leaving Facebook?

Absolutely not. This is only for group pages made for a handful of our support groups across all our sites. Our Peer Seattle/Kent/etc pages will still be up and active as ever.

What are we missing by not using Facebook for our groups?

Practically nothing. Our website is set up with customizable profiles and pages for our groups where we can still post content, have discussions, "like"/react to others' comments; everything relevant that you can do on Facebook, you can now do on our websites.

What are we gaining?

For one, more privacy for our members. Our user data will not be owned by Facebook.

For two, members that do not use Facebook.

For three, we don't have to deal with Facebook! Not only can some find the site triggering or just a waste of time, but we will have more control on the backside of our own websites allowing us to do everything we need to.

When is this happening?

For Peer Seattle, we are currently transferring our groups over. Peer Seattle will be our "test" before bringing this to our other sites (but expect that to start happening in a matter of weeks).

I'm worried!

Don't be! Marketing is setting up a brief meeting for Peer Seattle first to go over the basics of this new system. Honestly, it is surprisingly intuitive and is easier to interact with than Facebook. This meeting will also be recorded and made available for anyone wanting more overview.
In case you missed it...

Check out our "swag store" now HERE!

As employees, you will all be given store credit to purchase from the store (you should get an email from Rivet with a link to sign in). If you wish to buy more than the credit allows, you can do that with your personal money. If you buy less than your total credit, your credit will roll over to the next time we have a new company store (and more credit), and you can use it then.

Can only employees access the store?

No, anyone can! Others just won't have free store credit and will utilize it like any other online store. That said, soon we will have a process set up to award Peer's volunteers with in-store credit they can use to buy our swag (based on their volunteer hours).

Will the store change?

Yes! Around twice a year, the store will be updated with new items. The most important thing to note with this is that items currently in the store are not guaranteed to be there still the next time we update. So if you see something you really want, it is best to get it before too late.

Do I have to buy something?

Not at all. If you don't see anything you want, you can always save up your credit for the next store update and use it then.

Notes for the photoshoot:
This shoot will happen upstairs at Peer Washington.
1520 Bellevue Ave STE 202, Seattle, WA 98122
You are welcome to wear what you feel best in and represents you but please follow these tips:
1) Don't wear anything green; the photo will not work well with the green screen backdrop. Even small bits of green in your clothing will throw it off.
2) Please try and wear contrasting colors to the logo of your location. For example, Peer Kent uses a purple background, so wearing dark purple yourself will not stand out well.
3) Try to stay away from "branded" clothing or shirts with colorful pictures or images.
Please be prompt when showing up; we need to move people in and out of the room and not congregate so that we might respect everyone's boundaries and space. COVID protocols do apply, and you will have an opportunity to have photos with and without your mask on.

That said, I'm still a big fan of the original and its ability to tell a story. I found this version to be another way to enjoy the song back in its fabulous and strange glory.

A Note on Our Foundational Community Supports
The rate of homelessness within Washington State has continued to increase over the years as living costs continue to rise and living wages become harder to obtain. In January of 2020, King County reported a 5% increase in homelessness after 11,751 individuals identified as homeless within one night. Of these individuals, 47% were living unsheltered. As a peer lead emotional support service provider, we strive to ensure our members and community have access to the support and resources they need.
Offering housing and employment resources is just a small way Peer Washington works to decrease the number of those impacted by homelessness and lack of employment. Our Foundational Community Supports (FCS) program offers Apple Health-eligible members the opportunity to receive support through supported employment and supportive housing services. FCS services are modeled around Individual Placement and Support (IPS), an evidence-based practice focused on providing individualized, monthly 1-on-1 support. Our supported employment Peer Support Specialists (PSS) meet with members to connect on topics such as available competitive employment opportunities, educational/technical training, and even Medicaid and Social Security benefit offerings. While our supportive housing PSS team works closely with members to locate housing resources for rent assistance as well as permanent housing opportunities. All services offered are completely customizable and based on member preference to ensure the appropriate resources are received and encourage member autonomy.
Currently, Peer Spokane offers both supported employment and supportive housing services. Our Seattle location provides supportive housing and will soon offer supported employment services. While Peer Kent provides supported employment services with an addition of supportive housing services to come. We alone cannot end homelessness, but we can ensure our members are provided the tools and resources for financial success and stability. FCS-supported employment and supportive housing provide that foundation to ensure members continue to succeed long after services are utilized. It is a small step in the right direction in the battle to end homelessness for good.
To learn more about our FCS program or the supported employment and supportive housing services offered, please reach out to Justin (Justin@peerspokane.org), Kimmy (Kimmy@peerseattle.org), or Michelle (Michelle@peerspokane.org). They are great resources!

Javan Jones and Drug Diversion Court
Article by our own Bert highlighting our staff and services
At 47 years old, Peer Kent Program Manager Javan Jones, walks with confidence
into the courtroom at King County Regional Courthouse. This is a full circle
moment for a man who knows the judicial system inside and out.
Jones has no problem telling people about his past. It includes poverty,
homelessness and prison time. It also includes service in the US military, a college
degree and business owner. Jones has a wealth of experience and knowledge that
makes him uniquely qualified to run Peer Kent’s Jail Health Services contract with
the Criminal Justice Service.
Under the contract, Javan coordinates and advocates for inmates in the King
County Drug Diversion Court. While the King County Diversion Court has been
successful in helping people to get back on track, Jones feels there was a vital
piece missing to it. “Drug court has the punitive representation, the case
management/therapeutic representation, but no one had yet brought in recovery
representation, “says Jones, “Peer Kent is the missing recovery piece that can
truly make a difference for people.”
Jones is deeply committed to making this work. He attends King County Drug
Diversion Court in Seattle and Kent and his team works closely with the judges,
attorney’s (both prosecuting and defense) and with the case managers. Together,
before court even begins, judge, attorneys, case manager and Peer Kent, meets
behind closed doors and tracks each defendant’s progress and plan moving
forward. “This is the time when we can speak for the person in jail, and help them
come up with ways of support, “says Jones. Of particular value is one of the core
pillars of Peer Kent, having people with lived experience walk side by side with
those seeking help.
It works because of the trust Jones has built with the drug court. Now Jones
continues to build his own team, with new Peer Kent employees with lived
experience, who will also help others navigate the judicial system and sobriety.
But as Jones points out, always at the forefront, is the person in jail. Those men
and women who may never have received a helping hand, free of cost and
judgement, who now have a safe place/person for advice and guidance.
When Jones is asked, “why do you do this difficult work?” Jones replies, “the job
chose me- the job chose me.”

Tune of the Month
Seattle indie-pop band Pillar Point worked with Kia LaBeija to create this captivating music video. The warmth and freedom expressed here make for a great break from our grey winter, and boy, do I want her jacket.
